GermanZero and its '1.5 Degree Climate Plan' for Germany.

The federal government's climate package is not enough to make a decisive contribution to the climate change, critics say. This is why the initiative GermanZero introduces ‘The 1.5 Degree Climate Plan’. The goal? To make Germany climate neutral by 2035 and limit the global warming of no more than 1.5 degrees celsius - instead of three degrees.

With the introduced climate plan, GermaZero wants to support the politics to fulfill their climate goals and believes that Germany has the responsibility worldwide to take action. The initiator of the campaign is Heinrich Strößenreuther, who initiated a new mobility law in Berlin in 2016 with a popular cycling decision.

The climate plan was developed with more than 20 leading policy and environmental and scientists. It comprehensively describes the German contribution to limiting earth overheating to 1.5 degrees celsius, and additionally takes into account the question of global climate justice. The plan describes six different sectors: energy, industry, transportation, buildings and heat, agriculture, land use, nutrition and our ways of life. In addition, measures have been defined and specified: rising minimum CO2 prices in all sectors, dismantling and conversion of climate-damaging subsidies, compensation for additional emissions abroad.

After presenting the detailed climate plan at the GermanZero press conference on December 17, 2019, GermanZero will work with a citizens’ council in 2020 next year to turn the climate plan into a climate law. In this council 100 to 150 citizens are to discuss with each other. With the help of a strong national activation campaign, it will pass with a 2/3 majority in the Bundestag. This is the first and last chance to turn the tide.
